Design 101 pretty much states that the sofa goes on the longest wall in the room, no? Well I'm bored with not only the furniture placement in our living room, but with the furniture itself. We bought the sofa& matching chair (faux pas I know) back when we first bought our house. It's here to stay for awhile or at least until we renovate our basement but until then we decided to move it around to see if another layout would work.
Current Layout
Option 1- sofa in front of window on short wall
Option 2- Sofa facing long wall. Art to potentially move
& replaced with tv but blocks flow from front door entrance & stairs
Back to the original layout- sofa on longest wall works the best
Does the sofa always work best on the longest wall?
Candice Olsen sometimes puts her sofas on the short wall, but it depends on the width of the room and distance of the sofa from doorways and circulation paths.
ReplyDeleteWhat if you tried the floor lamp at the other end of the sofa, need the doorway, and placed two chairs opposite facing into the sofa? Then again, that would require buying another matching chair ;)
Your room is so nice! I do think that the sofa on the long wall looks best in your case.
ReplyDeleteLooks great!
I actually like the sofa placed in front of the window. Maybe 2 small side tables next to the sofa and if you're thinking of new furnishings, I would probably get 2 side chairs either directly in front of the sofa with a side table between them or smaller accent chairs kind of diaginal to the sofa as it seems the right side is an entry way into the family room. I feel the "sofa on the longest wall" rule is a good guideline to follow and is the "if all else fails that's the safest bet" kind of rule - but as you know, rules are meant to be broken.
ReplyDeletebtw - I'm new to your blog and your place is looking very nice! :) I'm in the middle of renovating my place as well. Happy Bloggings!
Option 1 is my favourite - not a big fan of option 2... It just feels like it doesn't use the space well and doesn't show off your lovely possessions!
